A reflection on the process of artistic creation

By: Laura Rojas Polania

On July 16, the exhibitions "Progresión" by the Colombian artist Aníbal Vallejo and "Prelibri" by the Salvadoran artist Abigail Reyes were inaugurated in Medellín, at the Lokkus Arte Contemporáneo gallery. Two works that reflect on the processes of artistic creation and its relationship with drawing, painting and installation.

The Colombian artist does not present a finished work, hence the name of his exhibition: Progression. Precisely what he wants to propose is the path that is followed for the completion of a piece to the final result. “In this exhibition I am not presenting finished works but parts of a great puzzle of thoughts. What I show is that path that is more valuable, from my perspective, than the finished work”, he says.

Vallejo was born in Medellín in 1975 and studied Visual Arts at the University of Antioquia and Fashion Design at the Colombian College of Design. He later settled in Europe where he continued his training as a painter. In his career, of more than ten years, he has participated in different exhibitions in galleries and international art fairs. His work, which is based on the investigation of techniques and media, revolves around the pictorial. “It is made up of basic shapes and figures that I assume as objects. I like the idea of composing and recomposing elemental forms in different ways and from different techniques that are not necessarily used in traditional painting”. His drawings are ideas or thoughts that come from some work or that will be inspiration for a future one.

Repetition in his work seeks unattainable perfection: “It is repeating a shape or an idea with the aim of improving it, even knowing that it is a failed search, since there is nothing perfect, at least in what I do”, he comments. There is also evidence of an affinity for the textile and the patterns used on the fabric, which he considers as a plastic element to introduce into the work.

This exhibition will be on display from July 16 to August 16 at the Lokkus Arte Contemporáneo gallery. (Carrera 35 no. 8ª-16, Medellín)
