The Cartama River, witness to time and life in southwestern Antioquia, winds its way through the memory of those who have walked its banks and gazed upon its silver currents mirroring the blue of the skies. In this exhibition, Aníbal Vallejo invites us on an intimate and personal journey that recreates landscapes that have shaped his childhood, family history, and creative process.
The centerpiece of the exhibition, a large-scale asymmetric polyptych, unfolds across twelve panels of varying sizes, composing a visual narrative of accumulated thoughts, prolonged observations, and memories transformed into painting. Brushstrokes, lines, and textures form a reflection in motion — a constant search for harmony. The landscape, observed from the family estate La Cascada, in the La Mesa village of the municipality of Támesis, emerges in every fragment, in every stroke. The polyptych is a visual and emotional puzzle that invites viewers to reconstruct the sensations the artist has accumulated over the years.
La Cascada: View of the Cartama River from La Mesa is a tribute to southwestern Antioquia — a region imbued with landscapes, colors, scents, and sounds that evoke the depths of the artist’s childhood. The mountains, the sunrises and sunsets that bathed his grandparents' home in light and mist, come alive in this work. The Cartama River, silent and majestic, appears not just as a physical element but as a symbol of connection between generations and territories — separating and uniting the municipalities of the region.
Vallejo invites us to share his memory, to see through his eyes, and to discover how those landscapes are reborn and take on a new form. As his grandfather expresses in the poem Tierra caliente, the river not only carries water but also memories, experiences, and the very soul of that land.
This exhibition is also an opportunity for the public to discover Vallejo’s creative process — a journey of transformation culminating in the main piece. Additional works of varying formats serve as variations and reflections that document this process, showing how the work breaks down and reassembles through sketches and studies that are part of a larger whole. One example is The Hours, a series of five successive small-format paintings that evoke Claude Monet’s series of paintings of the Thames River in London at the end of the 19th century. Like the French painter, Vallejo reveals a single point of view in different tones, inevitably capturing the passage of time. Complementing the exhibition is Farallón, a sculpture made of cotton rope, intervened with acrylic paint strokes. Conceived as a spatial drawing, this piece subtly suggests the outlines of the surrounding mountains and continues the embroidered language recurrent in Vallejo’s work.
The exhibition is not merely a gaze into the past; it is an encounter with the essence of what painting means to Vallejo: an act of continuous thought, a search for balance that, like the river, flows endlessly.

LIMBO: FIGURE, SPACE, AND THE THRESHOLD OF THE UNDEFINED
Limbo is a state of suspension, an in-between space where the figure dissolves, and meaning remains in constant transformation. In this series, the work unfolds within an ambiguous territory, exploring the limits between presence and absence, between recognizable form and its dissolution into abstraction. The human figure, a recurring element in artistic tradition, is brought here to a breaking point: disintegrated, reconfigured, suspended at a threshold where it ceases to be a subject and becomes an echo of itself.
In these new pieces, limbo is both a concept and a pictorial process. The relationship between figure and background becomes a dialectic of disappearance and emergence, where the image is not absolutely defined but fluctuates within the pictorial space like a vestige in transformation. The compositions oscillate between presence and evanescence, immersing the viewer in a visual experience that challenges the stability of form and compels them to reconstruct their perception of the image.
Historically, the concept of limbo has shifted between various interpretations: in religious tradition, it has been a place of waiting and exclusion, a space inhabited by souls unable to reach either punishment or redemption. In philosophy, it is associated with existential uncertainty, suspended time, and the anguish of transition. In psychology, it manifests as an emotional state of stagnation, mourning, or the redefinition of identity. In each of these realms, limbo represents a border condition, a zone of passage that offers no definitive answers but rather open questions about being and its relationship to its surroundings.
Color, a fundamental narrative element, acts as a rarefied atmosphere that reinforces the sensation of suspension. Tonal transitions and veiled contrasts evoke the altered perception of time in limbo: a dilated present, a space of waiting where the figure appears trapped at its own threshold. In this sense, Limbo aligns with artistic and literary traditions that depict this state as a geography of uncertainty, a territory where identity fades, and the viewer is invited to complete the image through their own subjectivity.
Beyond its conceptual exploration, the work confronts us with a profoundly human sensation: being suspended in a state of transformation, at the edge of the known and the yet-to-be-revealed. In limbo, painting becomes a space of transit and possibility, where uncertainty is not merely a void but a form of existence in itself.
THE CHAIR AND THE ABSENT BODY
A central piece in the Limbo exhibition, this work materializes the tension between presence and dissolution that runs throughout the series. Resting on an old study chair—an object laden with memory and contemplation—the suggestion of a body emerges, a fragmented figure oscillating between construction and collapse. As in his paintings, Vallejo blurs the boundaries between form and void, allowing the figure to merge with the space that sustains it.
This piece is embedded in an exploration of the unfinished and the humility of materials. In the spirit of Arte Povera, Vallejo leaves the materials exposed, revealing their structure: bare wires, expanded foam, loose threads. These materials, which frequently appear in his paintings, function here as remnants of an ongoing process. The artist’s intervention does not seek to erase the traces of its making but rather to amplify them, allowing each element to retain its own voice. Thus, the piece is not merely a representation but also a record of a transitional state.
In Limbo, the figure is never absolutely defined; instead, it hovers on the threshold of its own disappearance. Here, chair and body become a single entity, an assemblage where the space of contemplation transforms into the body of the artwork. The piece captures that moment of suspension, inviting the viewer to complete it through their own perception of transition, absence, and identity in flux.

The Figure Unraveled: The Seen And The Unseen
Within the sphere of artistic expression lies a continuous exploration between figuration and abstraction, where the interplay of form and background unfolds an intriguing narrative. Embarking on this journey, each canvas becomes a field of experimentation, an arena where the dialogue between composition and creation evolves dynamically. Figures emerge from the depths of the subconscious, revealing themselves in layers of paint and thread. Liberated from the constraints of conventional representation, they dance on the surface, inviting interpretation and introspection. The artist's hand guides this process, weaving together threads of personal experience, shaping the narrative with each stroke.
Yet, these figures are not static entities; they are dynamic, evolving beings on the brink of transformation. They teeter on the edge of dissolution, threatened by the ephemeral nature of existence. And yet, they are held together by the delicate balance of brushstrokes and threads, maintaining their integrity amidst chaos. Surrounding these figures are timeless backgrounds, devoid of specific location or context. Abstract yet familiar, they provide a backdrop for the unfolding scene, hinting at stories untold and emotions unspoken. Within these ambiguous environments, fragments of figures find their place, blurring the lines between reality and imagination.
There is no singular identity within these figures; instead, there is a mosaic of many people, a collage of disparate experiences and perspectives. They are reflections of the human condition, capturing the essence of life's complexities in a single brushstroke. It is left to the viewer to unravel these enigmatic compositions, to piece together the fragments and uncover the hidden truths within. The paintings do not bear titles; instead, they are identified by numbers that mark the moment of their conception, chronicling the diary of an artistic process. Each number carries with it a story, a chapter in the unfolding narrative of creation.
In the end, "The Figure Unraveled" is not merely a series of paintings; it is a meditation on the nature of existence, a reflection of the eternal dance between form and background, between the seen and the unseen. It is an invitation to journey into the depths of the human psyche, to explore the mysteries of the universe, and to embrace the beauty of imperfection.
